Glutinous Rice Ball Soup

Yum! My favorite… this is “tong yuen” or glutinous rice ball. It is eaten to welcome the Winter Season but it is almost Spring here in Australia. Oh well, I guess it can be eaten at anytime of the year.

It signifies the end of a good harvest and the beginning of the resting period because it is too cold for the farmers to tend the fields. Tong yuen is also served on all auspicious occasions like wedding, birthday, anniversary or an official opening as it symbolizes Tuanyuan (reunion) and Yuanmun (perfect).
